Ketamine seized from passenger
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs seized 25 kg of Ketamine Hydrochloride from a Taiwan-bound passenger on Monday. He was arrested.
C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, (Airport), said the officials intercepted Mohammed Mohideen Mohammed Nasar (21) on suspicion. The passenger was holding an executive class ticket.
His luggage contained four stainless steel tea cans, which were found to be unusually heavy. When the officials cut open the outer layer of the cans, they found packets inside. Each can was found to contain 6 kg of the drug, packed in polythene bags, Mr Rajan said.
Monetary consideration
“The cans were new and the welding had been carried out in such a manner not to raise any suspicion or doubt at the first look,” he said. Preliminary investigation revealed that the passenger had agreed to carry the drug to Taiwan for monetary consideration.
Rs. 2.5 crore
The seized Ketamine was valued at Rs 2.5 crore in the international market.Since January this year the Customs officials have so far seized 46 kg of Ketamine, which was valued at nearly Rs 5 crore, Mr Rajan added.
