Marad case: bail condition relaxed HIGH COURT ROUND-UP

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Monday relaxed one of the conditions set by the court while granting bail to the two accused in the Marad violence case.

The condition was that they shall not meet any one except their counsel or their spouses or parents or children or persons to be approved by the Special Court. The court, while relaxing the condition of the bail granted to Abul Latheef and Sakeer, said that they were, however, not restrained from occupying the same building taken on rent within the three km radius of the Kozhikode Special Judge.

The court also said that certificates of the property valuation need not be insisted.

The special judge could consider other materials produced by the accused with due affidavit to satisfy himself about the valuation of the property.

Lottery case

Justice Antony Dominic on Monday directed the Assistant Commissioner (Assessment) Commercial Taxes, Palakkad, to accept the advance tax offered under the Kerala Paper Lotteries Tax Act by the Megha Distributors, Palakkad towards the sale of lottery run by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

The directive came on a petition filed by Megha Distributors.

The Commercial Tax Department took the stand that it refused to accept the tax because the distributor had not obtained registration as promoter of the lotteries run by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

The registration taken earlier was automatically cancelled and they had not applied for any fresh registration.

The court rejected the contention and directed the tax department to accept the advance offer.

Plea for CBI probe

A writ petition was filed before the court seeking an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the allegations of irregularities that took place in Malabar Cements Ltd. during 2006-07 and 2007-08.

The petition was filed by P. Devadas, secretary, Bharatiya Yuva Morcha, Palakkad district committee.
