CGHS centres to hold yoga classes

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Twenty-four major Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) centres in the Capital will conduct general health screenings and yoga classes for their beneficiaries to promote the concept of “prevention is better than cure”.

The scheme, to be pilot-tested in Delhi, will be extended to all CGHS beneficiaries across the country and is expected to cover over 10 lakh families. This was announced by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss while inaugurating the National Yoga Week-2008 here on Monday.

The programme will be under way till the end of this month at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga here.

More than 400 delegates from across the country are participating in it, including over 60 experts from yoga and allied sciences.

Dr. Ramadoss said the latest programme under CGHS was aimed at netting the huge financial burden that the scheme was facing due to a sharp increase in lifestyle-related diseases.

“With a rise in lifestyle related ailments, we have to ensure that diseases that can be prevented early on are netted. This latest programme will benefit the common man in the long run.”
