BHOPAL: The opening day of the Budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Monday saw the Governor, Balram Jakhar, broadly project the policies and schemes being implemented by the State Government for the welfare of farmers, weaker sections of society and women besides various initiatives for all-round progress of the State.

The Governor began his address by lauding the Chief Minister’s social security scheme for landless farm labourers which offers financial help for medical treatment, maternity and wedding purposes and also covers accidental death. The Governor said that 37 investment proposals worth Rs.4,274 crore were received at the Agro-Business Meet organised for the first time in the State capital for the benefit of farmers.

He said the Madhya Pradesh Sahkari Society Act had been amended on the recommendations of the Vaidyanathan Committee and the cooperative societies were being involved in purchasing farm produce at maximum support price. Under the ambitious plan to double the volume of agricultural loans, the State Government had decided to clear cooperative loans amounting to Rs.3060 crore for farmers during the financial year 2007-08.

The Government had also decided to lower the interest on short-term farm loans from 7 per cent to 5 per cent, he said, adding that the State Government would be offering an additional bonus of Rs.100 per quintal on the procurement price for wheat announced by the Central Government.

Dr. Jakhar said the Government had decided to offer 50 per cent subsidy on farmers’ pending electricity bills and reduce their per unit tariff. He said there had been improvement in electricity supply during the rabi season this year and the procedure for providing temporary connections had been simplified.
