Meet on fertility comes up with novel presentations

HYDERABAD: The three-day annual meeting of the Indian Society for the Study of Reproduction and Fertility which concluded here on February 22 was marked by several novel presentations, including the first in the world demonstration of uterine transplantation in sheep and goat.

Made by Edwin R. Ramirez and five others of the University of De La Salle Veterinary School of Medicine, Bogota Colombia, and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, New York Methodist Hospital, it showed that the transplant could be considered as another alternative for infertility.

According to organising secretary Roya Rozati, another first was the demonstration of sperm check immuno chromatographic device by John C.Herr of the Department of Cell Biology, University of Virginia, and six others. It was described as a novel idea at the conference. In a presentation, Syed N.Kabir and four others of the Reproductive Biology Research, Medicinal Chemistry, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata, and National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, said microbicides represent a new strategy to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV. They have identified a triterpene glycoside, Acaciaside-B, which possess activity against HIV and contraceptive potential.

Sixty eminent scientists and clinicians, besides 500 delegates participated in the deliberations during the three days at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology and Owaisi Hospital and Research Centre, one of the organisers. Eight gold medals were conferred on young scientists who were selected for best oral and poster presentations, including Dr.G.P.Talwar Gold Medal given to the best oral and poster presentations.
