Election 2009

This refers to the article “Election 2009: Congress tortoise and BJP hare” (Feb. 25). The Congress tortoise has withdrawn into its shell at the threat of a possible defeat in the next Lok Sabha elections. Its sensory apparatus has not been sensitive enough to understand what most people it governs think about its policies and programmes.

It has not realised that GDP growth rates and stock market boom alone cannot help it to succeed. The way to the people’s hearts during election time is through their stomachs, not through the minds of the upwardly mobile and applauding middle classes.

K. Vijayakumar,

Bangalore

The article made fantastic reading. One moot question that keeps coming up is: “Who to vote for in the coming elections?” What is the common man expected to do when he doesn’t agree with the ideology of any political party but is reminded to exercise his franchise?

Madhu Teotia,

New Delhi

Stalemate marks the political process at the national level. There is a dearth of statesmen. Good leaders cannot be invented or imposed. They have to evolve from the political process. All political parties should reinvent themselves and redefine their objectives. A political party should not only influence the masses but also mould them into an enlightened citizenry. To begin with, parties should re-establish inner party democracy.

P. Venu,

Kakinada
