This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru on February 24 presented the Sahitya Akademi awards for 1957 to authors of five outstanding books published in Indian languages during the years 1954-57. The recipients of the awards are Premendra Mishra (Bengali), the late Acharya Narendra Deva for his Hindi book Buddha-Dharma-Darshan (philosophy of Buddhism), Chirantananda Swami (Telugu), Dr. Kwaja Ahmad Faruqi (Urdu) and Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai (Malayalam). The award consists of Rs. 5,000 and a copper tablet with the name of the author, etc., inscribed on it. In a brief speech Mr. Nehru expressed the hope that the awards would encourage creative writing in the country. The Vice-President Dr. Radhakrishnan, who is also the Vice-president of the Sahitya Akademi, congratulated the authors and expressed the hope that the awards would stimulate further writing and enhance the reputation of the respective literatures.
