NEW DELHI: No hike in passenger fares and about one per cent cut in freight tariffs are being anticipated by industry in the Railway Budget for 2008-09 to be presented to Parliament on Tuesday in view of the turnaround that railways has witnessed over the years due to which the Railways are likely to see a minimum of 15 per cent increase in its passenger and freight inflows in the next fiscal. This is the finding of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) survey covering 300 CEOs who were of the firm view that the Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav would keep the passenger tariff of all categories virtually untouched. Assocham surveySeventy per cent of the CEOs exuded confidence that in the 2008-09 Railway Budget proposals, the Railway Minister was likely to announce one per cent freight cut in all categories of industrial freights to ensure that the infrastructure’s contribution to overall inflation remained under contained limits, the survey observes.
