THE CHAMPIONS: The Madurai team which won the men’s title.

Dindigul: Madurai won the men’s title while Chennai retained the women’s title in the second Tamil Nadu State games hockey tournament organised by Dindigul Unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu at the District stadium here on Monday.

In both the sections, host Dindigul finished runner-up.

In men’s final, Madurai prevailed over Dindigul by a solitary goal off a penalty stroke conversion by Karthick. The exchanges were even between the teams. Dindigul could have taken the lead in the first session but Prabu missed two easy chances. In the second session Madurai attacked strongly and could have taken the lead in the 50th minute when a fine cross by A.G. Kannan was well connected by Ramdas but the ball went over the crossbar.

However, in the 58th minute, A.G. Kannan went on a solo effort inside the circle and was about to score but a host of defenders, haulted him by brining him down. Umpire Arockiam pointed to the dreaded spot and the decision was vehemently opposed by Dindigul men. However Arockiam stood on his decision and Karthick converted the penalty stroke.

In the women’s final it was Dindigul, which scored first in the 22nd minute through Jennifer. Chennai restored parity with a 32nd minute goal by Vidya, who connected a free hit taken by Rani. Jeyanthi pumped in a penalty corner in the 36th minute and Amutha completed the tally by connecting a cross from Vidhya in the 40th minute.

The results: Men: Final: Madurai 1 (Karthick) bt Dindigul 0. Semifinals: Madurai 3 (Sathyaraj, A.G. Kannan, Ramdas) bt Thiruvallur 1 (Kanagaraj); Dindigul 2 (Jeyaraj, Prabu) bt Ariyalur 1 (Santhosh).

Women: Final: Chennai 3 (Vidya, Jeyanthi, Amutha) bt Dindigul 1 (Jennifer). Semifinals: Dindigul 1 (Keerthi) bt Madurai 0; Chennai 3 (Jeyanthi, Abinaya, Abi) bt Thiruvallur 0 via tie breaker.
