State film awards announced

Six films are selected to be viewed by the jury


Sisir Mishra and Surendra Sahoo are recipients of Jayadev Puraskar

“Jai Jagannath” gets the special jury award


BHUBANESWAR: Mumbai-based Oriya filmmaker Sisir Mishra and former principal of the Cuttack-based Biju Patnaik Film and Television Institute (BPF&TVI) and cinematographer Surendra Sahoo would be the recipients of the coveted Jayadev Puraskar, the State’s highest honour for cinema, for 2005 and 2006 respectively.

Announcing the State film awards for 2006 here on Monday, Culture Minister S.N. Patro revealed that a jury was comprised former Deputy General of Police Bipin Behari Mishra, noted singer Rashmi Mohapatra, eminent journalist Pradosh Patnaik, eminent Odissi dancer Kumkum Mohanty, popular singer Pranab Patnaik, noted writer Bibhuti Patnaik and popular actress Jharana Das. The jury members had viewed six of the 16 Oriya films made during the year to select the awardees.

Selected films

While four of the films made in the year were dubbed films and thus did not come under the purview, the rest of the six films were not received by the government as entries, it was learnt.

The remaining six films that came up for viewing by the jury were “Puja paine phulatiea”, “Pheria mo suna bhauni”, “Bhagyachakra”, “Premarutu asilare”, “Babu I love you” and “Jai Jagannath”.

Highest no. of awards

Gadadhar Puty’s scripted and directed “Puja paine phulatiea” claimed five awards - best direction, best story, best cinematography (Jugal Debata), best back ground female singer (Sreema Panda) and best child artist (Adyasha Mohapatra).

While Mihir Das and Jina bagged the best actor and actress awards for “Pheria mo sunabhauni”, the film won the best screenplay award for Ranjita Mohanty.

Best Music award

“Bhagyachakra” swept away the major awards in music segment - best music director (Om Prakash Mohanty), best background male singer (Ratikant Satpathy) and best lyricist (Rajani Ranjan).

While noted filmmaker Sabyasachi Mohapatra was adjudged for the special jury award for “Jai Jagannath”, the film also claimed best editing award (Rajendra Mohapatra).

The other awardees include Arindam as the best supporting actor for “Premarutu asilare” that also claimed best comedian (Pintu Nanda) and best sound recording (Nityashri Ranjan) awards while Archita was selected as the best supporting actress for “Babu I love you” that bagged the best art direction award (Amiya Moharana).
