The president of PCI blames AICTE for mushrooming of private pharmacy colleges Major changes likely in the Pharmacy Act of 1948 BERHAMPUR: Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) would be the sole managing authority of the pharmacy colleges in the country in near future. At present the pharmacy colleges operate under two managing authorities, the PCI and the Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Lack of infrastructureSpeaking to newsmen during his visit to the city to take part in the conference of the Orissa unit of the Indian Pharmacists’ Association (IPA), the president of the PCI, B. Suresh said ground work for this great step towards making pharmacy education in India at par with international standards was already on. He felt dual control of the PCI and AICTE on the management of pharmacy education was a major hindrance in the path of maintaining quality of pharmacy education in the country, which is major need in the era of globalisation. He blamed the AICTE for mushrooming of private pharmacy colleges through out the country, most of which lacked adequate infrastructure of laboratories and staff. According to him AICTE issued permissions to these private institutions without proper investigation into their background. Mr. Suresh informed that the union government is all set to bring in this change some other major changes through amendments in the Pharmacy Act of 1948. The bill for these amendments was expected to be tabled on the floor of the parliament during the current budget session. These amendments would make the Pharmacy Act of the country suitable to the modern needs of pharmacy sector. It may be noted that to make Indian Pharma courses at par with global standards the PCI has recently introduced Pharma.D courses in India.
