Tamil Nadu
The 122-km-main line of Villupuram-Mayiladuturai railway section with 27 major and 320 minor bridges was taken up for gauge conversion in December 2006. There is some delay in completion of Coleroon Bridge work, resulting in a traffic hitch and is expected to be completed by June this year. I would, therefore, suggest and request the authorities to complete the 46-km Villupuram-Cuddalore stretch and get the clearance from the Safety Commissioner. S. Gopalan, Chennai Temple tourThe Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has arranged a daily package tour service from February 18 from Chennai to the Golden Temple at Sripuram near Vellore and a visit to Sri Murugan Temple at Rathnagiri. This service will be very useful to the public in and around Chennai. A similar package tour to visit the Golden Temple at Sripuram and Murugan Temple at Rathnagiri will be very useful to the public in and around Thanjavur. Will the TTDC arrange a tour at least once in a week? R. Sankara Narayanan, Thanjavur. Bus route violationsAll government and private buses operated from Tiruchi and Pudukkottai, both day and night should go via Palpannai, Thilakar Thidal, Palaniappa Talkies, Government Hospital to New Bus Stand. Many of them are violating this route and the Regional Transport Officer should take strict action. C. Palaniappan, Pudukkottai. Insufficient street lightOwing to the welcome measure of widening the Medical College Road at Thanjavur, the street lights are insufficient. It is very dark in the lanes on the southern side. If lights cannot be provided in the middle, the municipality can provide powerful street lights for that side. R .J .B .Frederick, Thanjavur. Post office woesThe sub-post office at Thanjavur bus stand is functioning in the same building for about five decades now. The accommodation has been provided by the Municipality in a corner of the commercial complex. The location of the post office is obscured. The front of the building is always occupied by street vendors and buyers. Inside the post office, there is lack of space, light and ventilation. The staff will certainly feel depressed to work in such an atmosphere. The postal department may seek the help of the municipality. G. Vedarajan, Thanjavur. Merge Karaikal with Tamil NaduPeople in Karaikal have been demanding Union Territory status. It is evident that Karaikal was being sidelined by the successive state governments for a long time. Though the town is an integral part of Puducherry Union Territory, the infrastructural development of the town is not up to mark. The town lacks a spacious and well planned bus stand. A railway line to other parts of the country is still as a mirage. I suggest that it be merged with Tamil Nadu. R. Ganesan, Mayiladuthurai. Reopen farm centreThe Agriculture Extension Centre, behind the Bus Stand in Adirampattinam, has remained locked over the years. Though it was rebuilt a few years back, the centre did not start functioning. Due to the closure of the AEC, the agriculturists and tree-growers in and around Adirampattinam are unable to get timely advice to augment yields. They have to face much hardship and visit other centres. The authorities of Agricultural Department to should take immediate steps to reopen and enhance the infrastructure of the AEC. A.Haja Abdul Khader, Adirampattinam. Donate Re.1Over 6.92 crore people are beneficiaries of various government welfare schemes like 2 kg rice, free colour TV sets, marriage assistance and unemployment allowance in the State. If all the above beneficiaries are advised by their Collectors to contribute Re.1 every month for an year to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund, liberal financial assistance could be sanctioned to poor people and school-going children under the Tamil Nadu government’s recent scheme of “Vazhvoli Thittam” for costly operations for heart, kidney, spinal chord and brain-tumour. R. S. Moorthy, Karur. Summer specialsDespite repeated pleas, the Southern Railway has not cared to announce the operation of summer special trains from the Cauvery Delta districts to other parts of the State to cater to the demand of the travelling people in summer. I request authorities to introduce overnight summer special trains between Mayiladuturai and Kanyakumari and Kumbakonam and Chennai three times a week. Suhail Ahmed Bijli, Thanjavur. Coin shortageIt is high time that the government raised the minimum moffusil bus fare to Rs.4 from Rs.3.50 due to dearth of 50 paise coins. On account of this, there are frequent heated exchanges between commuters and conductors . K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam.
