Workers storm GVMC office

UP IN ARMS: Municipal workers picketing the GVMC office demanding payment of revised wages on Monday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The municipal workers laid siege to GVMC main office on Monday forcing the authorities to concede their main demand for payment of revised wages with arrears by March 5.

Following discussions with Additional Commissioner B. Bhaskar and Chief Health and Medical Officer J. Nageswara Rao, it was announced that the revised wages as agreed during talks with the CITU-affiliated union in November 2007 would be implemented from next month.

The arrears would also be disbursed along with February salary.

GVMC Emloyees Union honorary president P. Venkat Reddy, working president G. Subba Rao, secretary M. Rambabu, joint secretary K. Sudhakar and CPI (M) leader Ganga Rao were present.

The GVMC authorities will pay minimum pay of Rs.2,888 and Rs.540 towards ESI and Provident Fund to about 800 contract and society workers.

At present, they are getting between Rs.1,600 to Rs.1,700. Dr. Ganga Rao said they had also brought to the notice of the authorities irregularities being committed in the payments for workers engaged under Subhram and Jana Chaitanya schemes.

The slogan-shouting protesters alleged that Subhram and Jana Chaitanya workers were not paid the promised amount due to fraud being committed by some middlemen and sanitary staff.

Subhram workers were denied contribution from the residents’ welfare associations. The GVMC share of Rs.1,800 was also being not disbursed under the plea of deductions towards broomstick and tax.

Dr. Ganga Rao said GVMC share of Rs.900 was being denied to Jana Chaitanya workers whereas some middlemen were forcing the workers to collect Rs.10 to Rs.20 per household for door-to-door collection of garbage.
