THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Four records were set on the opening day of the all-India inter-university aquatic meet here on Monday. Rehan Poncha of Bangalore set the pool on fire with a record in the 400m freestyle. He clocked 4:18.30s to improve his own mark (4:20.44) set in 2005. However, Poncha was beaten at the post in an exciting 200m backstroke by M.B. Balakrishnan (Anna University) who swam to a new record — he broke Poncha’s old mark (of 2:16.35 set last year) by finishing in 2:13.80s. Poncha also bettered the existing record by finishing second in 2:13.81. In the women’s section, V. Tejaswini of Bangalore broke Sumy Cyriac’s 12-year-old record in the 200m breaststroke. At the end of first day, Bangalore was leading the points table with 36 points followed by Calicut (15) and Andhra (13). The results: Men: 400m freestyle: 1. Rehan Poncha (Bangalore), 2. Chaturvedi Dhananjay (Gujarat) 0:27.30; 200m breaststroke: 1. V. Abhishek (Bangalore), 2. Anoop Augustine (Calicut), 3. Srinand Srinivas (Rajeev Gandhi), (2:35.25); 4x100m relay: 1. Calicut, 2. Madras, 3. Kerala (4:26.80). Women: 800m freestyle: 1. V. Tejaswini (Bangalore), 2. Shilpa Naidu (Andhra), 3. Josna P.Joy (Calicut) (9:57.88); 100m backstroke: 1. Amreen Malik (Andhra), 2. V. Tejaswani (Bangalore), 3. Sony Cyriac (Kerala Agriculture) (1:09.84); 50m butterfly: 1. Amreen Malik (Andhra), 2. V. Tejaswini (Bangalore), 3. Ghorpade Pooja (Pune) (0:30.88 – NMR; OR – 0:32.13, B.
