The civic body’s workforce was right at the forefront throughout the 10-day festival, supplying water to the devotees, enforcing hygiene and cleanliness in hotels and cleaning up roads in the festival zone. The sanitation workforce was augmented with temporary hands to clean up the roads after the Pongala offering on Friday. Teams of workers worked right through the night to clear tonnes of bricks left behind by the devotees. Uniformed employees swept the roads clean of litter and ash. Tanker lorries fitted with sprayers were also pressed into service to wash the main roads. Jayan Babu, Health standing committee chairman G.R. Anil and Health Officer D. Sreekumar were present to direct the massive operation. Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohammed Kutty was quick to compliment the Corporation Council and the employees for their commitment to the task. He however observed that the local body had failed to enforce the ban on plastics. T. Nandakumar
