Staff Reporter

It will act as a bridge between farmers, banks

NABARD will reimburse Rs. 1,250 for inviting experts to attend meetings

The clubs should meet once a month with 100 per cent attendance

Krishnagiri: Farmers should save the income created by credit and pay loan installments regularly to recycle credit said the Assistant General Manager, NABARD, V. Thirumalai, at the inauguration of a farmers club at Maniandapalli panchayat, near here, on Tuesday.

The farmers’ clubs are expected to act as bridge between farmers and banks. Those who are willing to serve society are chosen as Chief volunteers and Deputy volunteers.

A group of 10 to 20 farmers with an impeccable track record form the farmers clubs. They should belong to the same villages or contiguous villages for the purpose of monitoring.

The farmers’ clubs should meet once in a month and 100 per cent attendance is required.

Mr. Thirumalai said that the meetings may finalise the credit needs of the members, formulation of village development plans, social issues of the villages, problems faced in carrying out agriculture and allied activities so that the same can be taken up with the higher agencies.

For the Base Level Orientation Programme, NABARD will reimburse the expenditure up to Rs. 5,000 and for maintenance for the first three years Rs. 3,000 will be given on conduct of meetings, maintenance of registers and spending the maintenance grant given during the previous year.

Experts from agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, sericulture and animal husbandry can be invited for which Rs. 1,250 a meeting will be reimbursed by NABARD.

SHGs

The farmers’ clubs can also form SHGs and the club can form a maximum of 10 SHGs. Incentives at the rate of Rs. 500 per credit linked SHG will be extended by NABARD.

Mr. Thirumalai also highlighted the five principles of development through credit. In the emerging scenario, the role of banks have changed from being mere purveyors of credit and recovery of bank dues and they are now the catalyst of change in the villages.

Changes

With the recent changes in the banking industry, rural banking includes participation in community activities and preparing village development plans etc.

The farmers clubs are expected to act as a bridge between the farmers and banks. He exhorted Pallavan Grama Bank to inclusion in Ennekolpudur and extend General Purpose credit card to the benificiaries and ensure insurance coverage for all the residents of the village.
