PUDUCHERRY: The recently constituted Group of Ministers to examine the detailed project report on the setting up of the Government Medical College in Puducherry met for the first time on Tuesday.

Government sources said the Group of Ministers sought particulars pertaining to land, contract given for filling up the land and construction of buildings, hire percentage of contract and appointment of staff from the Puducherry Medical College Society (PMCS), constituted by the administration to construct and run the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Medical College and Research Institute.

The Group of Ministers, set up by the government following public criticism over “the high expenditure involved in the construction of the hospital,” had given the members of PMCS a week’s time to submit the particulars, sources said.

The report submitted by the Delhi-based Hospital Consultancy Corporation Limited had estimated a project cost of Rs 853 crore for constructing the hospital and to manage it for the immediate five years, the sources said. The Society members informed the Group of Ministers that so far a sum of Rs 87 crore had gone into the construction of the hospital, they added.

The Group of Ministers, comprising Health Minister E. Valsaraj, Education Minister M. O.H. F Shahjahan and Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao was constituted on February 14 through a government order.
