Teachers plan massive protest

Correspondent

They decide to gherao ‘Naveen Nivash’, the official residence of Chief Minister

Protest planned on February 29

Block grant to all private colleges opposed

CUTTACK: Teachers and employees of 488 colleges in the State have decided to call the final shot of their agitation. The employees of 288 colleges whose services were validated in 1992 and the employees of 233 colleges whose services were validated between 1992-1998 have formed a joint coordination committee and have decided to launch a massive protest rally in Bhubaneswar on February 29. “We have decided to gherao the “Naveen Nivash”, the official residence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik”, said the coordination committee convener Pradeepta Kumar Sahu. The coordination committee at a meeting here recently decided to romp in at least 10,000 employees for the rally.

Mr. Sahu said a preliminary meeting was held here recently to chalk out the agitational programmes in which at least 500 activists from both associations resolved that they were prepared to launch the ultimate struggle against the Government to achieve their genuine and long-pending demands. The participants discussed a four-point charter of demands.

He said, “we have rejected the State Government’s proposal of 40 per cent block grant to all the private colleges of the State including the 630 non-aided colleges. “The 40 per cent block grant would create a great disparity among teachers and other employees. All the college teachers irrespective of their seniority would get around Rs 5400 per month,” Mr. Sahu informed.
