State gives in to MLCs’ fast threat
HYDERABAD: The Government has agreed to start a degree college in Ranga Reddy district after two Members of Legislative Council, K. Nageshwar and Sudhakar Reddy (both Independents), threatened to launch an indefinite fast and resign their membership.
Raising the issue during question hour, the members said they would fast if the Government failed to give a firm assurance on the college. Later, they told reporters that they would quit as MLCs.
Pointing out that the Government realised Rs. 3,057 crore by selling 389 acres in the district, they faulted it for not establishing a degree college.
Intervening, Finance Minister K. Rosaiah said he had taken up the issue with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the process for establishing the college would start soon. The MLCs hailed the decision.
Tribal university
Following a plea by members cutting across party lines, Tribal Welfare Minister D. Redya Naik assured to discuss with Dr. Reddy the need to establish a tribal university for research and protection of tribal culture and customs.
