Naxal intrusion to be curbed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Home and Tourism, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Tuesday that the government had taken steps to ensure that naxalites from other States do not infiltrate into Kerala.

Replying to questions in the Assembly, the Minister said the Intelligence wing was closely watching the situation. Sub-jails will be constructed at Thiruvananthapuram, Kakkanad, Viyoor, Kannur, Kozhikode, Mananthavadi and Thodupuzha and a women’s jail at Kannur. In reply to a question, Mr. Balakrishnan said Rs. 89.79 crores had been sanctioned for the Prison Department to purchase ambulances, jeeps and motorcycles.

The Minister, in reply to another query, said eight coastal police stations — Vizhinjam, Neendakara, Thottapalli, Fort Kochi, Azhikode, Beypore, Azheekkal and Bekal — had been sanctioned. Of them, Neendakara coastal police station will begin functioning soon.

The Home Minister said the police had been instructed to increase patrolling to check crime and to maintain law and order in the State.

Monitoring hawala

A separate cell in police had been set up to monitor hawala transactions in the State. As many as 24 cases had been registered after the present LDF government came to power. Hawala transactions to the tune of Rs. 5.45 crores had been detected, the Ministers said in reply to another question.

Police suspended

In a written reply to a question, the Minister said 60 personnel of Kerala Police had been placed under suspension for indulging in criminal activities. Of them, seven are facing murder charges.
