Funds for Dalits sought

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The former Social Welfare Minister A. Krishnappa on Tuesday demanded that the Bruhat Bangalore Manahagara Palike must spend the Rs. 137 crore earmarked in its budget for implementing the welfare programmes and development works benefiting the Dalits in the city.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Krishnappa alleged that the BBMP had set apart only Rs. 137 crore as against Rs. 580 crore in the 2007-08 Budget for welfare. Out of the allotted amount, it had spent only Rs. 37 crore. He alleged that the people of Bangalore were facing acute water shortage.

The Cauvery water project and the underground drainage works had come to a standstill, he said. He urged the BBMP Commissioner S. Subramanya to immediately start work and provide relief to the Dalits in the city.
