THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala would continue to be neglected by the Railways in the absence of a proposal for a Kerala-based zone in the Railway Budget, BJP leader O. Rajagopal has said. Mr. Rajagopal, who was Union Minister of State for Railways in the NDA government, told journalists on Tuesday that much of the funds allocated to the State were being diverted at the zonal level. Of the Rs.254 crore allocated for Kerala in the current year, Rs.176 crore was diverted to Tamil Nadu. Only a zone covering the two Railway divisions in Kerala and either Salem or Madurai Division of Tamil Nadu was the solution, as manipulation of allocations took place at the zonal level. He said there were several zones with just three divisions. The proposed zone would have 2,600 km of railway lines while zones such as Jabalpur and Allahabad had only about 2,000 km of lines under three divisions.
