The team visited ISRO and IT firms in the city They showed special interest in biotech companies Bangalore: A delegation of businessmen from Howard County in Maryland, the U.S, was here to explore opportunities for doing business with Bangalore-based companies. The team, led by the Executive of Howard County, Ken Ulman, visited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and several IT establishments in the city in an effort to forge links with local businesses. Mr. Ulman accompanied the Miniature Synthetic Aperture Radar (MiniSAR), which is to be on the payload of Indian Space Research Organisation’s Chandaraayan 1, the unmanned lunar mission to be launched by the ISRO later this year. MiniSAR benefitThe Applied Physics Laboratory, The Johns Hopkins University, in association with the Naval Air Warfare Centre, has built the MiniSAR. The project for building the instrument, costing $10 million, was funded by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The component will help to measure the water content in the polar region of the moon. Mr. Ulman said Bangalore had other attractions apart from IT. He referred to the presence of a large number of biotechnology companies with whom U.S. companies would be willing to do business with. Infrastructure and environmental solutions, he said, were other areas in which Howard County-based investors would be interested in. AdvantageRichard Story, CEO of the Economic Development Authority, Howard County, said, historically, the county’s proximity to the Baltimore and Washington D.C., had given it a strategic advantage. Since September 11, the increase in spending by the Defense and Homeland Security departments in the U.S. had drawn technology-driven companies to the county. He said the tax and other incentives offered by the county were other reasons which drew investment, particularly in hi-tech areas, to the county, which is the third wealthiest county in the U.S.
