This Day That Age
The Lok Sabha on February 23 referred the Merchant Shipping Bill 1958 to a Joint Select Committee after five hours of debate. The Bill is a comprehensive one dealing with all aspects of merchant shipping and has as many as 447 clauses. It seeks to revise and consolidate all laws in force in India relating to merchant shipping whether passed by the British Parliament or by the Indian legislature and makes provisions for matters like administration, registration of ships, navigation, seamen’s conditions, control of Indian ships engaged in coastal trade and several other matters. It was introduced by the Minister for Transport, Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri. There was also a plea for improving the conditions of service of Indian seamen.
