Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article “Pakistan: a chance as never before,” (Feb. 26). The people of Pakistan have given the PPP and the PML (N) a great opportunity to restore democracy in their country. They have rejected the forces of conservatism and terror, and said ‘no’ to a military regime. Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari should rise above narrow interests. Else, they will open the gates for another military coup. Political parties of Pakistan need to learn from their mistakes of the past. The need of the hour is a strong and dedicated leadership. The tasks in hand include the restoration of the judiciary, democracy, and harmony in Pakistan. Sudhir Kumar Sinha, New Delhi The chances for a stable democracy in Pakistan have brightened following the February 18 election. The moderates have commendably prevailed over the extremists and fundamentalists. The use of military might against extremist elements only creates more of them. The Iraq war and the Palestinian conflict are proof of this. It is in this context that democracy in Pakistan must succeed this time. R. Narayanan, Ghaziabad
