Tiruchi
Right recognition: Rm. Veerappan, former Minister and president of the Kamban Kazhagam, Chennai, third from left, conferring the ’Tamil Mamani’ award on Ooran Adigalar in Tiruchi. TIRUCHI: Individuals and institutions have a great responsibility in contributing their might for the growth and development of Tamil language, the former Minister and president of the Kamban Kazhagam, Chennai, Rm. Veerappan said. Speaking at the 16th anniversary of the Shenbaga Tamil Arangu, Srirangam, here recently, Mr. Veerappan said that in the present day scenario, it would appear so difficult to distinguish between actions based on political mileages and services directed towards Tamil development. The presence of Dravidian movement should not be misinterpreted as a political transformation. Its growth was synonymous with the progress of Tamil language and its culture. In this context, he said that at a time when glorification of Tamil was being relegated to the background, the announcement of declaring the first day of the Tamil month of ‘Thai’ as the Tamil New Year day has come as a great solace reflecting the richness of Tamil culture. All sincere efforts should be made to take this message to the common people. The Shenbaga Tamil Arangu honoured noted Tamil scholar and convener of the Samarasa Sanmarka Research Centre, Vadalur, Thavathiru Ooran Adigal with the title ‘Tamizhmaamani’. Mr. Veerappan conferred the title on Adigalar who is also the vice-president of the Tamizhaga Hindu Turaviyar Peravai. The president of the Tamizhaga Pulavar Kuzhu, P. Arangasamy released the book ‘Sinthanai Karuvoolam’ authored by former joint director of the state information department, V.T. Veerappan. The first copy was received by V.R. Ramanathan, K. Pandurangan and S. V. Subramnaian. The former head of the Department of Tamil of Bharathidasan University, Ezhil Muthalvan, Tamil scholar Arivoli, S. Gopalakrishnan of Agashtiar Publications and C. Sivasankaran and others felicitated Ooran Adigalar and Mr. Veerappan. Ooran Adigalar and Mr. Veerappan delivered acceptance speech. The founder of the Arangu, K. Rajavelu Shenbagavalli explained the role played by his organisation in promoting the cause of Tamil language and literature by organising regular meetings.
