‘Act tough on crimes against women’

Women asked to retort upon being provoked or harassed


DAVANGERE: Assistant Commissioner of Harpanahalli division Latha Kumari has called upon officials to initiate action to curb harassment on women, particularly those working.

Chairing a special meeting at her office in Harpanahalli on Tuesday, she said that despite many rules safeguarding the interests of women, they continued to be exploited by men. Ms. Latha Kumari underlined the need to create awareness among women and apprise them of their rights. She also told women to retort whenever they were being exploited or harassed by men. Although women had proved that they were equal to men, male chauvinism continued to be the order of the day, she added.

She said many social evils such as dowry and sexual harassment were being reported everyday and called asked officials to ensure that those guilty were punished at any cost.

Nagesh Ithal, Circle Inspector of Harpanahalli, said he had received a few cases in which husbands in Harpanahalli had harassed their wives for dowry.

Planning Officer of the Child Development Department Umapathy and medical officer Renukacharya were present.
