A well-balanced assistance

R. Krishnamoorthy

Thirumurugan’s difficulty has now been made a thing of past

Perfect fit: The Collector, Anil Meshram, right, fixing a modular artificial limb on the amputated part of the right leg of Thirumurugan, in Perambalur.

PERAMBALUR: After losing a leg in an accident a few years ago, Thirumurugan, a Standard V student of Kallal Panchayat Union Middle School in Perambalur district, could only sadly watch his mobility hampered by the weight of a low-cost artificial limb so far.

Thirumurugan’s difficulty has now been made a thing of the past. Thanks to the new scheme of the Government that empowers District Disabled Rehabilitation Officers to choose school students in need of modular artificial limbs costing Rs.27,000 a piece.

Thirumurugan was identified as the beneficiary by N. Selvaraj, District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer of Perambalur district. The latter received a light-weight modular artificial limb from the Collector Anil Meshram recently. The functional limb was customised to the student’s requirement by a Chennai-based company.

The modular artificial limb is flexible and also has the appearance of a natural leg. Elated by the happiness of Thirumurugan over receiving the functional limb, the Collector himself sponsored for the student a pair of new shoes.

Similar was the case of Rajesh, a Standard X student of Government Higher Secondary School at Kolakanatham in the adjoining Ariyalur district. Rajesh was provided with the light-weight functional limb by the Collector, Xavier Chrisso Nayagam. Mr. Xavier has taken steps to provide one such limb to another beneficiary, Marimuthu, a Standard IX student of Jayankondam Government Higher Secondary School.
