Disqualification of 3 BSP MPs: report tabled
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Tuesday laid on the table of the House a report on the proceedings that led to the disqualification of three Bahujan Samaj Party MPs, all from Uttar Pradesh, who had “voluntarily” joined the Samajwadi Party and had thus incurred disqualification under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.
The proceedings were taken up on the basis of three separate petitions submitted by Rajesh Verma, leader of the BSP in the Lok Sabha. In each case, the Speaker found the three MPs had incurred disqualification under paragraph 2(1)(a) of the Tenth Schedule. They were all disqualified by his order dated January 27, 2008.
Mohammed Shahid Akhlaque represented Meerut, Ramakant Yadav was elected from Azamgarh and Bhai Cha -ndra Yadav was the MP from Khalilabad. All three have been disqualified and the three Lok Sabha seats have fallen vacant. The Speaker’s report details the charges against them and says the response of the three MPs to the charges was found wanting and, hence, he had upheld the plea of the petitioner.
