CHANDIGARH: The Central Ground Water Board has declared 55 blocks of Haryana, including all six development blocks of Karnal district, as highly exploited areas, an official spokesman said here on Tuesday. He disclosed that Karnal block had already been notified as a dark area in the year 2003 because of a depleting water table. The other five blocks of the district would also be notified as dark areas shortly. In such areas, he said, no new tube-well could be installed without approval of the Central Authority. The Karnal district administration has been advised to get a survey of all tube-wells of the district conducted for their registration. This would also help in getting information about ground water. It has also been suggested that since Karnal is located on the banks of the Yamuna, the excess of river water during the rainy season should be used and conserved. At present the district has 70,000 tube-wells which include 68,000 for agricultural purposes and the remaining 2,000 belong to the Health and Irrigation Departments besides the Haryana Urban Development Authority. Meanwhile, a spokesman of Karnal district administration said that all effective steps would be taken to recharge the ground water .
