Military ties separate: Gates

Sandeep Dikshit

NEW DELHI: U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates on Tuesday said military-to-military ties with India would remain independent of the civil nuclear agreement whose fate hangs in the balance with three Senators telling Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that it should be tabled in the U.S. Congress for ratification before July end.

However, Mr. Gates was hopeful of India inking a safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency and getting an exemption from the Nuclear Suppliers Group that would enable the U.S. Congress to take it up for consideration.

“We are certainly hopeful that India can get done what it needs to, so that we can get done what needs to be done,” Mr. Gates told newspersons on his first visit here for discussions.
