MADURAI: Minister for Backward Classes K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran has proposed to create a multi-layered official set-up to monitor Kallar reclamation schools. “The performance of Kallar reclamation schools is good. But we want to raise their standard so as to enable the students to get State ranks,” he told reporters here on Tuesday. Stating that only the officials of Department of Backward Classes Welfare were monitoring the functioning of 260 schools in Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts, he said, “We want to put in an administrative set-up on the lines of Education Department to bring the schools under our control.” The department had proposed to construct additional school buildings for seven schools and establish laboratories for four schools at a cost of Rs. 116 lakh, he added. Hostels to be upgradedAfter reviewing the functioning of the Department of Backward Classes in the district, Mr. Ramachandran said that efforts were being taken to upgrade all the 1,181 hostels run by it. “We want to create a conducive atmosphere for students to concentrate on their studies with neat hostel building and good food.” The wardens had been instructed to remain in hostels till the students finished their night study and supper.
