Compound wall issue simmers

VIJAYAWADA: Residents of Labour Colony on Tuesday took exception to the support extended by P. Gowtham Reddy, CPI floor leader in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) general body, to the construction of a compound wall around Uppalapati Ramachandra Raju Municipal School at Labour Colony in Vidyadharapuram.

Mr. Gowtham Reddy had earlier alleged that the ruling Congress was creating much noise over the construction of compound wall around the school as it had failed to focus on developmental issues in One Town.

Labour Colony Residents Association president P. Veera Reddy and joint secretary M. Sarvottama Rao alleged in a statement that the CPI leaders were supporting Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar’s attitude of “throwing the labourers’ problems to wind.” CPI corporator G. Koteswara Rao and others of his party were supporting the Municipal Commissioner, as many of the residents of the Labour Colony were supporting the Congress.

Mr. Koteswara Rao bore a grudge against the colony residents as they rejected his invitation to come to his party office.

Mr. Gowtham Reddy’s statement in support of the Municipal Commissioner was not up to his stature and was contrary to the guiding philosophy of the CPI, they said.

The Labour Colony residents also alleged that Mr. Gowtham Reddy was writing anonymous letters against their “genuine struggle” to the media. It was evident with Mr. Reddy’s statement on Monday that “he is misguiding the media with baseless allegations,” they said.
