TAMBARAM: A 30-year-old youth and a 23-year-old woman were killed in separate accidents on Grand Southern Trunk Road in Tirusulam and Velachery Main Road in Medavakkam on Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, Nirmal, his wife Aarthi and their one-year-old daughter Sofia were travelling on a motorcycle. They were returning to their house in Pallavaram from Pazhavanthangal after calling on a relative. Near the grade separator under construction to link Grand Southern Trunk Road with the Chennai Airport, the motorcycle was hit in the rear by a State Government bus bound for Uppiliyapuram in Tiruchi district. In the impact, the motorcycle skidded , dragging the three . While Sofia and her father had a miraculous escape, Aarthi sustained severe injuries on her head and neck. She was rushed to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital (Chromepet GH), where she was pronounced dead on arrival. In another accident later in the evening, Raj Mohan died on the spot when he dashed against a lamp post on the median on Velachery Main Road in Medavakkam. Son of Muthu and a resident of Vettuvankeni, Neelankarai, Raj Mohan was working in a private company. He was riding a motorcycle with his friend Viji seated on the pillion. He was negotiating a sharp curve, when he lost control of the motorcycle and dashed his head on the lamp post. Pallikaranai police said Raj Mohan died on the spot, while Viji has been admitted to a private hospital. Eyewitnesses and residents of an apartment complex near the scene of accident complained that the sharp curve was a risky stretch. No signboardsThe State Highways Department, Chennai City Traffic Police and Medavakkam Village Panchayat had not installed caution signs warning motorists about the sharp, dangerous curve ahead. Steel barricades were placed in different places on Velachery Main Road, but none in this spot to keep a check on over speeding and rash driving. Though the road was widened and medians provided, parking of commercial vehicles posed risks. The location of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation’s two liquor shops on either sides of this arterial road made travel extremely risk for pedestrians, cyclists and road users, residents said.
