Flyover project delay holds up traffic

Sharp-edged tin sheets used as dividers between Trisulam station and airport

CHENNAI: Motorists and other road-users crossing the airport are facing serious problems even during lean hours.

The delay in the construction of a flyover in front of the airport has resulted in the traffic hold-up even during late night hours.

The most disturbing factor is that sharp-edged tin sheets, tied to iron rods, are used as dividers between the Trisulam railway station and the airport. The metal sheets pose a threat to road-users, especially two-wheeler riders. In the absence of a proper pedestrian crossing in front of the airport, many jump over the sharp-edged metal barriers to reach the airport from the railway station. For the senior citizens, it is a nightmare to cross the road.

Equally bad is the condition of the road. Poor illumination aggravates the problem, say road-users.

Road-users want the completed subway, connecting the Trisulam station and the airport, to be thrown open to the public at the earliest. This will at least help the pedestrians reach the airport and the railway station without much problem.

If there is a clear way, passengers from the city could easily reach and leave the airport without any trouble, says a senior officer of the Airports Authority of India. The National Highways Authority of India has cleared the pavement in the northern portion, which had shrunk the road width.

NHAI officials attributed the delay to the problems in land acquisition. A large portion of the land belonging to the Defence Ministry are yet to be handed over. “If the works are speeded up, we will be able to complete it before April,” says a senior officer. The work began in January 2005.
