‘Tourist places are symbols of culture’

In response to Public Eye dated February 13, B. Smitha Rao from Lady Hill says: “The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada have tremendous tourism potential. The problem, however, lies with the people and officials who do not understand the significance of tourist places as symbols of tradition and culture. They do not wish to preserve them either.

The projects, including those in tourism, are valued from the point of view of returns. Tourism promotion for the sake of tourism can never succeed. Genuine awareness needs to be created through media. Various institutions can lend assistance in this effort.
