Question paper mix-up: examination cancelled

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BA /B.Sc/B.Com supplementary paper one, English, examination held on Tuesday was cancelled following a mix-up in the question paper that was noticed after the examination began.

The question paper given to the 2004-admission candidates was based on a text book prescribed for 2006-admission candidates. The mix-up, according to University officials, took place when the designated question paper setter chose the wrong text book while setting the question paper for the 2004-admission supplementary examination. The mix-up came to light when frantic candidates in many exam centres, unable to answer questions from a textbook they did not have to study, pointed out the problem to invigilators. Later in the day, the University decided to cancel the examination and to conduct a re-test on March 10.

As per the regulations governing the setting of question papers, the chairman of the board of study concerned gives a panel of possible question paper setters to the Controller. The setters are then chosen at random from this list of persons who reside outside the State. A ‘scrutiny committee’ of two is also selected from this list. It is the chairman of this committee who decides which question paper setter gets how many questions to set. This particular question paper was set and later, scrutinised. However, nobody noticed that the questions were from the text book ‘The Other Harmony’ while they should have been based on the textbook ‘Prime Prose.’
