Costford, Habitat, Nirmithi Kendra take up projects Approval for list of 1,448 beneficiaries eligible for aid THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The City Corporation is set to launch a slew of housing schemes and slum improvement projects with assistance from the Union Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Deputy Mayor V.Jayaprakash told the Corporation Council on Tuesday that work on the reconstruction and improvement of five slums, namely the Rajiv Nagar Colony, Kannanthura, Two Cent Colony, Kadakampally, Bund Colony Kannamoola, Karimadham Colony and Poonkulam Colony, would start by the first week of March. While the rehabilitation of the Karimadham Colony is to be executed by the Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (Costford) at a cost of Rs.12 crore, the Habitat Technology Group will take up the project for the Rajiv Nagar (Rs.3.33 crore) and Bund Colony (Rs.4.32 crore). The Nirmithi Kendra has been entrusted with the development of the Two Cent (Rs.51.5 lakh) and Poonkulam (Rs.1.37 crore) colonies. The reconstruction of five more slums, namely the Beemapally Vlaavilakam Colony, Mannamola Colony, Manvila Harijan Colony, Manvila Settlement Colony and Bala Nagar, will be taken up in the next phase. The Council meeting approved the list of 1,448 beneficiaries in 75 wards eligible for financial assistance under the scattered housing scheme, a component of the JNNURM. Mr.Jayaprakash said 1,000 houses would be completed this year itself. The Corporation is all set to disburse financial assistance for the construction of 2,154 houses in the five suburban panchayats of Kazhakuttam, Vattiyoorkavu, Vizhinjam, Sreekaryam and Kudappanakunnu and another 5,343 houses in 14 coastal wards, he added.
