This Day That Age
The Railway budget was discussed in both the Houses of Parliament on February 26. In the Rajya Sabha, where the debate concluded, the Railway Minister, in his reply, made no important announcement except to state that the Government were carefully examining the report of the Railway Freight Structure Committee, and he would place it before Parliament before it was implemented though it was not necessary to do so. He also said that the decision, taken a few years back, not to nationalise the 400 odd miles of narrow gauge lines run by municipal bodies and private companies still stood, though the employees in these railways were agitating for nationalisation. On the question of electrification, Mr. Jagivan Ram pointed out that the total power generated at the end of the Second Five-Year Plan would not be enough for the requirements of the country and also the electrification would involve a lot of foreign exchange. However, the railways were working in cooperation with the Department of Electricity and they would electrify about 1,300 to 1,400 miles of lines under the Second Plan.
