Training for literacy officers

Call to improve overall literacy rate in the district

Steps afoot to educate SHG members: official

Kakinada: The Education Department on Wednesday conducted a training session for mandal literacy officers (MLOs) for the implementation of the third phase of ‘Akshara Bharati’ programme which is a part of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan.

Speaking on the occasion, District Collector M. Subrahmanyam said that priority should be given to educate women as it would have a positive impact on the entire family.

He said the female literacy rate in the district was hovering around 60 percent whereas 65 percent of the males were literate.

Therefore, efforts have to be made to educate the women at a par with men.

Illiterate women

The total number of illiterate women was found to be 15.87 lakh. Nearly 60 percent of them were covered under the adult literacy project.

The MLOs should strive to improve the overall literacy rate which is about 65 percent by working in coordination with all the departments concerned.

The Collector also suggested to the mandal literacy officers to spread awareness about family planning, HIV/AIDS and other important issues in addition to discharging their duties on the education front.

District Rural Development Agency Project Director Ch Kumara Swamy said efforts were on to educate members of the self-help groups (SHGs).

Central team

The district has 72,000 SHGs and formal education was being imparted to the illiterate among them.

A Central team would be visiting in April to make an in-depth analysis of the reasons for illiteracy in the district.

Deputy Director of Adult Literacy M Ammaji Rao said Akshara Godavari scheme was focusing on improving the literacy rate in the 18 to 40 age group.
