TDP walks out over ‘suppression’ of BCs

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Members of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by N. Chandrababu Naidu staged a walkout from the Assembly on Wednesday, protesting against the alleged suppression of Backward Classes by the Congress government because they supported the TDP.

The CPI(M) and the CPI expressed ire at the meagre budgetary allocation for BCs’ welfare, but did not resort to walkout. N. Narsimhaiah, CPI(M) floor leader, said his party would organise a rally in Hyderabad on March 19 to highlight the BCs’ problems.

The issue of BC welfare figured through a question tabled by K. Atchan Naidu (TDP) and others, seeking details on the present status of the Rajiv Abhyudaya, a scheme that replaced Adarana implemented by the Telugu Desam government. Backward Classes’ Welfare Minister M. Mukesh Goud replied that a sum of Rs. 17.5 crore had been released under the scheme during the last four years, benefiting 32,804 families in urban areas.
