Sagarika will spark arms race: Pakistan
Nirupama Subramanian
ISLAMABAD: India’s underwater test-firing of a new missile would spark an arms race in the region, but Pakistan would endeavour to ensure that it did not have any adverse impact on the region, Navy chief Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir said in Karachi on Wednesday.
He was responding to a question from a journalist on the test-firing of Sagarika, a nuclear-capable missile fired from underwater.
“A serious issue”
“Well, my reaction is that this is going to start a new arms race in the region. We are aware of these developments and these developments are taking place with a view to putting nuclear weapons at sea and it is a very, very serious issue.” The official Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Admiral Tahir as having said “the impact of this on the regional situation will be looked into and our best efforts would be that it has no adverse effect in the region.”
