Misuse of ISI marks detected

Coimbatore: A team of officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards, Coimbatore Branch, conducted an enforcement search and seizure operation in Gandhipuram area on Monday to check the misuse of ISI mark on packaged drinking water.

Director of BIS G. Bhaskar said that the raid was conducted on the premises of a packaged drinking water manufacturing unit at Ram Nagar. It was found that fake ISI marks were used on 20-litre jars. They were bottled and packaged without a valid licence from the BIS.

The packaged drinking water unit was not having a valid licence to use ISI mark which was mandatory as per Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. Action has been initiated against the offender under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act of 1986. The offence was punishable with imprisonment up to one year or a fine of up to Rs. 50,000 or both.

Mr. Bhaskar asked the people to intimate any instance of misuse of ISI mark to the BIS, Coimbatore Branch office, Kovai Towers, 5th Floor, Balasundaram Road.
