Councillors extend support to set up additional bus stand in Vaniyambadi

Staff Reporter

VANIYAMBADI: Councillors of the Vaniyambadi Municipality in Vellore district have extended support to set up an additional bus stand near the Bypass. All 36 councillors of the municipality have supported a resolution adopted at the council meeting held here on Thursday.

Various resolutions pertaining to development works got full support from the councillors. It was also the first time that the councillors cutting across party lines supported resolutions adopted to bring in overall development in Vaniyambadi.

The councillors emphasised that the work on the underground sewerage scheme should be implemented earnestly. Municipal Chairman V. Sivaji Ganesan assured the councillors that he would make all efforts to expedite the scheme.

The situation at the meeting on Thursday was different from previous meetings where some councillors expressed reservation about the underground sewerage scheme as it involved a huge maintenance cost of Rs.85 lakh a year.

The residents, irrespective of their financial status, were required to pay a deposit of Rs.5,000 for drainage connection. However, during Thursday’s meeting, the councillors pledged total support to the scheme. They uniformly felt that the scheme would help to eradicate the mosquito menace. It would also stop environment degradation at Vaniyambadi, they said.

They also wanted the municipality to set up an electric crematorium at four places in Vaniyambadi - at Periapettai, Kamarajapuram, New Town and Koonamedu. Mr. Ganesan assured them that he would take it up with the the State government.

The issue of shortage of doctors at the Vaniyambadi Government Hospital was also discussed.

The councillors said that at present only three doctors were posted at the GH against a sanctioned strength of eleven. They wanted the municipality to fill the existing vacancies to help the patients.
