BANGALORE: The Union Water Resources Ministry has sanctioned Rs. 63.83 crore to the State for implementation of a recharge groundwater scheme through open wells in hard rock areas.
Funds will be utilised to recharge 1.6 lakh open wells spread over 82 taluks in 18 districts in the next three-year period commencing from 2007-08. The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has been identified as the nodal agency for execution of the scheme, according to National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
NABARD, regional office, Bangalore, on Thursday, organised a State-level capacity building workshop on the scheme. Out of 175 taluks in the State, open wells were over-exploited in 65 taluks, semi-critical in 14 and critical in three taluks. The unit cost per recharge structure is Rs. 4,100 for small and marginal farmers while other farmers would get 50 per cent subsidy, a NABARD official said.
