‘Scrap dual post of KPTCL Managing Director’
B.S. Satish Kumar
BANGALORE: In a major development in the power sector, the State power regulator has advised the State Government to discontinue the present system in which the managing director of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) holds the post of chairman of all the five electricity supply companies (Escoms) in the State.
The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission Chairman K.P. Pandey wrote a letter to the Governor’s adviser Krishna Kumar on February 22 asking him to immediately relieve the KPTCL managing director from the chairmanship of the Escoms. The managing directors of Escoms should be designated as chairmen and managing directors of their respective companies, the letter said.
This would not only remove the “stranglehold” of the KPTCL over Escoms, but also help in ensuring independent functioning of the power distribution entities, Mr. Pandey said. He said the present arrangement was affecting the commercial interests of distribution entities. He said Escoms had been formed as independent companies to unbundle power transmission sector from distribution. But during the hearing on tariff petitions, the commission noticed that KPTCL had been taking all the major decisions, related to the Escoms.
