TIRUCHI: A joint team comprising officials of Labour and Health Department and an official of the Child Labour Elimination and Effective Rehabilitation Society conducted surprise checks at commercial establishments at Thuvarankurichi in the district a few days ago to detect cases of child labour. An official press release said the checks were conducted in hotels, tailoring units, two and four-wheeler mechanic shops and other establishments. During the checks, the team found two 13-year-old boys employed in a two-wheeler mechanic shop on Karumalai main road. Action had been initiated against the shop owner under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act. Collector Ashish Vachhani warned of stern action against those found employing child labourers.
