He was allegedly assaulted by police during a protest in Sangli

Marching ahead: Activists of Sri Shiv Pratishthan taking out a procession in Belgaum on Thursday in protest against the alleged assault by the police on their leader Sambhaji Patil in Sangli on Wednesday.

Belgaum: The alleged assault by the police on Sri Shiv Pratishthan leader Sambhaji Bhide at Sangli in Maharashtra led to a protest in Belgaum on Thursday.

The district unit of the pratishthan condemned the alleged assault on Mr. Bhide and demanded that Superintendent of Police of Sangli Krishna Prakash Yadav be transferred immediately.

Activists of the pratishthan, who took out a procession from Dharamveer Sambhaji Chowk in Bogarves, submitted a memorandum to officials at the Deputy Commissioner’s office seeking an inquiry against Mr. Yadav. The protest here was led by the unit president, Kiran Gavade.

Mr. Bhide led a protest against the screening of Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodha Akbar at a multiplex in Sangli, Maharashtra, on Wednesday.

The police resorted to a lathicharge to control the mob that went berserk during the protest.

The pratisthan threatened to intensify its agitation against the screening of the controversial film if the Government did not ban it.

Nobody could play with historical facts on the pretext of creativity or art, the pratishthan said.
