Moily urged to rein in Congress seniors

Their remarks against Chief Minister embarrassing cadres, five DCC chiefs tell AICC general secretary

‘Strong sentiment for creation of a separate Telangana State’

‘State government undertaking unprecedented welfare programmes’

HYDERABAD: Presidents of five District Congress Committees in Telangana region on Thursday urged the AICC general secretary M. Veerappa Moily to advise the party seniors to restrain from making statements that were causing undue damage to the party’s image among the people.

The delegation of DCC chiefs comprising Ravinder Rao (Adilabad), S. Prakash (Mahabubnagar), Gadugu Gangadhar (Nizamabad), Mallesh Goud (Nalgonda) and G. Venkata Ramana Reddy (Warangal) reportedly brought to the notice of Mr. Moily the statements that were highly critical of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the government.

Sources said the DCC presidents lamented that because of the nature of remarks by the seniors, district-level functionaries were facing embarrassment as the cadres were questioning them as to why the high command was sitting quiet. They said that though the sentiment for creation of a separate Telangana State was strong, the government was also undertaking unprecedented developmental and welfare programmes.

Public meeting

They assured the AICC general secretary that the March 14 public meeting of party president Sonia Gandhi would be a resounding success. The presidents also expressed anguish that senior Congress leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions were making controversial statements on Telangana. They wanted Mr. Moily to issue a stern warning to all the Congress leaders not to issue statements that would cause embarrassment to the party.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Regional Development Board chairman V. Purushottam Reddy told reporters that he would attend the public meeting of Ms. Gandhi at Parade grounds in Secunderabad.

Mobilising people

He said massive mobilisation would be done for the meeting to impress upon the party president to consider the aspirations of the people of the region.
