HYDERABAD: Orissa Agriculture Minister Surendranath Nayak on Thursday said he was impressed by the State government’s schemes in the agriculture sector, especially free power supply and crop insurance with village as a unit. Mr. Nayak, who met Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy and the department officials for about two hours in the committee hall of the Assembly, told press persons that he would try his best to implement these schemes in his State. He said the Orissa government was implementing 80 per cent subsidised power supply and would study the feasibility of free power supply. The other significant step it had taken was to bring down the rate of interest of cooperative crop loans from 11 per cent to 7 per cent. Seeks cooperationBut he was all praise for the measures taken in Andhra Pradesh. He said he had come here to study oil palm cultivation, supply of quality seeds and crop insurance. “We hope to cooperate with each other in solving problems in the farm sector”. He went on to invite Mr. Reddy to Orissa. Mr. Raghuveera Reddy briefed his counterpart from Orissa on the various steps taken by the government during the last three years for the benefit of farmers and to increase agriculture production and productivity. Apart from free power supply, it had taken up construction of irrigation projects in a big way with huge budgetary allocations. It was now planning to extend 3 per cent interest scheme for crop loans too from this kharif.
